Improve Your Ability to Concentrate

Knowing what causes you to lose concentrate easily is the first step to improving the strength of your concentration. Once you know what factors contribute the most to distract you, you can then take steps to control them. Take time out now to sit down and list all of the things that can and usually do disrupt your concentration.

Distractions are usually a major reason why full concentration might be hindered. They typically fall into two categories: external and internal. External distractions can include noise, music, third party conversations, uncomfortable furniture, ill-fitting clothing, inadequate or harsh lighting, interruptions from other people (e.g. telephone calls, emails, instant messaging), television, work, and the Internet, while internal distractions can include, but are not limited to: hunger, exhaustion, illness, stimulants/depressants, lack of motivation, boredom, lack of organization, lack of interest, stress, and anxiety.

Here are a few tips and techniques for minimizing distractions:
  1. If possible, continue work on the same project at the same time each day. A regular schedule can help you see this time period as your “project time.”
  2. Set a time period of an hour on a timer and don't allow yourself to stop working until the timer sounds.
  3. Take breaks. A three minute break for every 30 minutes of concentrating is a good guideline. Take a longer break after 90 minutes. Studies show that the most people stay focused on a subject for only 45 minutes before their minds begin to wander.
  4. Set goals for your session that are realistic (number of problems to solve, pages to read, etc.) When you have met one of your project goals, reward yourself with a short break. Then, return to your study area.
  5. Work in an area that is comfortable but not to the point you will fall asleep.
  6. Make sure you have everything that you need before you begin.
  7. Make sure your environment is conducive to working on your project without any distractions, no TV, no telephone, no roommate, etc.
  8. If studying, make it an active process. Take notes and make review sheets. Intersperse different kinds of study into one session, e.g. reading, writing, taking notes, memorizing, etc.
  9. Make sure that you’re sleeping enough, eating well and getting regular exercise. Your mind will be more alert, and you will be less likely to fall asleep or daydream.

As you can see, it’s never too soon to start being proactive about your mental fitness and neurophysiological well being.
